Israel Prepares for Iranian Attack, Media Reports
Israel is preparing for potential attacks from Iran and the Lebanese Hezbollah movement in the coming days, anticipating that these assaults might come from multiple fronts, according to timesofisrael.com.
In light of the situation, the U.S. is striving to restore a regional coalition that was able to almost completely thwart a direct Iranian assault on Israel last April, during which Iran launched over 300 missiles and drones towards Israel in response to the assassination of senior Iranian military generals in Damascus.
Axios reports that a potential Iranian attack could occur on Monday, citing U.S. and Israeli officials. Iran, its Lebanese ally Hezbollah, and Palestinian Hamas have accused Israel of orchestrating the assassination of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday. Haniyeh's killing came just hours after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed Hezbollah military leader Fuad Shukri. Israel has claimed responsibility for Shukri's death but has not officially commented on Haniyeh's assassination. Both Iran and Hezbollah have vowed to retaliate for the killings.
In this context, Israeli security agencies are operating at the "highest alert" level, while members of the U.S.-led international coalition, including Great Britain and Arab ally nations, are attempting to contain and deter potential Iranian attacks, as reported by Israeli Channel 12.
The Ynet news website reported on security cabinet meetings that took place over the weekend in Israel, where authorities discussed preparations for a potential attack. There is a likelihood that this could lead to war, which may be executed on "five fronts." Israeli ministers have been told to be ready for any scenario, indicating that the attack could happen at any moment and might result in "thousands" of destroyed targets, the publication stated.
One senior Israeli official mentioned that Israel and the U.S. may have to counter the attacks from multiple fronts and that the country needs to be prepared for "many casualties." However, such a scenario may also provide Israel with the opportunity to strike back more forcefully and rally global support, the official asserted.
The U.S. has already reported the deployment of fighter jet squadrons and an aircraft carrier to the Middle East, bolstering American military presence to protect Israel from potential assaults by Iran and other movements supported by it, as well as safeguarding U.S. troops.
According to the Pentagon's statement, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has also ordered the deployment of additional submarines and destroyers capable of ballistic missile defense to Europe and the Middle East, taking steps to send more ground-based ballistic missile defense weapons to the region.
