Germany Calls for Border Control with Hungary at EU Frontiers

The Minister of Internal Affairs of Brandenburg, Germany, Michael Stübgen, has advocated for implementing border control with Hungary along all European Union frontiers. This comes in response to Budapest's decision to include Russians and Belarusians in a simplified long-term visa program.

According to TASS, Michael Stübgen made these remarks to the Bild am Sonntag newspaper. He stated, 'EU treaties allow for border controls to be implemented in exceptional situations. Just as we are doing with Poland and the Czech Republic, the same should be done by countries such as Austria, Croatia, Slovakia, and Romania. It is unacceptable for an EU state to allow Russians to enter the country.'

The report notes that Stübgen is the first political figure in Germany to call for border controls with Hungary. Furthermore, European People's Party leader Manfred Weber has also urged the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, to take stringent measures against Hungary in a letter.

He argued that allowing unrestricted entry from Russia into the EU seriously threatens Europe’s security. 'Government leaders need to clarify this issue at the next summit; there must be consequences,' Weber emphasized.
