Yerevan and Baku Agree on Border Demarcation: James O'Brien
James O'Brien, the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, has announced that Yerevan and Baku have reached an agreement on the demarcation of borders and have determined where the border lines should run. O'Brien made this announcement during a hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee's Subcommittee on Regional Cooperation and Security.
Commenting on the issue of Azerbaijan's occupation of Armenia's sovereign and strategic territories, O'Brien specifically stated: “Both sides have agreed on the demarcation process. They have agreed on where the border lines should be. And you are correct that there are certain areas still controlled by both sides, but it is likely that they will retreat as a result of the border agreement, with particular interest in the high mountainous regions. But I want to emphasize that this is a process being worked on by both sides.”
He also added that negotiations are ongoing between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding a peace agreement, which includes the demarcation of borders.
