Son Kills His Helpless 73-Year-Old Mother: Details

The investigation into the criminal case regarding the severe bodily injury inflicted by a son on his mother, leading to her death, has concluded.

As part of the criminal proceedings initiated by the Investigative Committee of Armenia in the Shengavit administrative district of Yerevan, essential details have been established through necessary investigative and procedural actions.

Specifically, on February 7, 2024, a report was received regarding a 73-year-old woman from Nor Kharberd who had been admitted to a medical center with severe injuries diagnosed as ‘polytrauma’ after an incident at home on January 27, 2024, around 6:30 PM. Immediate measures revealed that the woman had not sustained her injuries from a fall but from having been beaten. Consequently, a criminal case was opened under Article 166, Part 2, Clause 7 of the Criminal Code of Armenia.

Weeks after the incident, on February 29, 2024, a report was filed stating that an emergency medical team had responded to the same address in Nor Kharberd, where they discovered the 73-year-old woman dead in her home, days after having been hospitalized with multiple injuries.

The investigative-operational group immediately arrived at the scene, finding her on the floor with numerous injuries and evidence of asphyxiation. A further criminal case was initiated under Article 155, Part 2, Clause 9 of the Criminal Code.

A decision was made to consolidate the aforementioned cases. The investigation substantiated that in both incidents, the victim had sustained bodily harm inflicted by her 53-year-old son, who, according to available information, had previously committed acts of violence against her.

On January 27, 2024, around 1:30 PM, during a domestic dispute, the son struck his mother with a blunt object, which had been prepared for inflicting bodily harm, targeting the face and various parts of her body, thereby causing multiple injuries that deliberately inflicted severe harm on her health, resulting in stable loss of more than one third of her overall working capacity.

Weeks later, on February 29, 2024, between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, once again during a domestic dispute, the 53-year-old man, with intent to kill, struck his helpless mother, who was confined to bed due to fractures and unable to defend herself, on various parts of her head, face, and body with a glass bottle and other objects, causing life-threatening injuries.

To complete the crime, he then strangled his mother. According to the forensic medical examination's conclusion, the victim's death was caused by mechanical asphyxiation due to compression of neck organs.

Investigative actions conducted revealed that the son had been registered since 2001 for 'Chronic Alcoholism, Second Degree' as per the relevant healthcare facility's records. To clarify significant circumstances for the investigation, a forensic psychological examination was appointed, concluding that he was aware of the nature of his actions, their significance, and the danger they posed, thus capable of bearing responsibility for them.

Based on sufficient evidence, charges were brought against the victim’s son under Article 166, Part 2, Clauses 6 and 7, as well as Article 155, Part 2, Clauses 3 and 9 of the Criminal Code. He was remanded in custody as a preventive measure.

The investigation has been completed, and the case materials, along with an indictment, have been sent to court.
