Harris Receives Sufficient Votes to Run for President: Reports
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has received enough votes from Democratic Party delegates to qualify as a candidate for the presidency, according to a report by the Associated Press, which cited its own informal and non-final survey. According to the agency's findings, Harris has garnered the support of 2,668 Democratic delegates, whereas the required number is 1,976. AP notes that the survey is unofficial and its figures are not considered final.
RIA Novosti reported that Harris compared the Democratic Party's primary campaign in the U.S. to an "American roller coaster." "The Democratic Party's primary campaign in the U.S. reminds me of 'American roller coasters.' I understand, as we are all filled with so many mixed emotions," she stated.
On July 21, President Biden announced that he would withdraw from the race. Following the unsuccessful performance of the 81-year-old president in a televised debate with presidential candidate Donald Trump, representatives of the Democratic Party began discussing the need to find a replacement for Biden. CBS reported on July 22 that Harris could announce her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination on August 1. Presidential elections in the U.S. are scheduled for November 5, 2024.
