India Evacuates Over 4,500 Students from Bangladesh

India has evacuated over 4,500 students from Bangladesh amid protests and unrest against the government’s quota system for public sector jobs, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs reported, according to RIA Novosti.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, citizens of Nepal, the Maldives, and Bhutan were also evacuated from Bangladesh.

The Indian embassy in Dhaka is maintaining regular contact with local authorities to ensure the safety of Indian citizens. In the backdrop of widespread protests, the Supreme Court of Bangladesh announced its decision regarding the quota system for public sector jobs on Sunday, reducing the number of positions three times.

The court's decision allows candidates without quotas to apply for 93% of public sector jobs, while 5% of civil service positions will be reserved for children of war veterans, and 2% will be allocated for several other categories of individuals.

This ruling came amid a curfew in Bangladesh and restrictions on mobile networks and the internet.
