New 'Rules' Implemented for French Police Ahead of Olympics

Police must create a welcoming image of France for the upcoming Olympics, and therefore they are prohibited from using mobile phones and chewing gum, announced France's Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

During a press briefing for the police force, Darmanin expressed concerns about the country's image as it prepares to host delegations from around the world. He emphasized that just one or two mistakes by police officers could generate a scandal in the press.

The minister instructed police to ensure that there is 'no gum chewing' during the Olympics, stating that police personnel should project an image of strength and safety. 'We are not looking at our mobile phones, we greet people, and we maintain composure in all situations,' Darmanin noted.

The official tasked his subordinates with always smiling, being polite, and welcoming. He added that law enforcement would not have a second chance to make a good first impression. Darmanin's comments were reported by the 20minutes portal.

Every day, approximately 35,000 police and gendarmes, along with 18,000 soldiers, will provide security for the Olympics. It is worth mentioning that the Olympic Games will take place in France from July 26 to August 11. In late May, France's Ministry of the Interior thwarted a terrorist plot planned by an 18-year-old man from Chechnya, suspected of preparing an attack during football matches in Saint-Étienne.
