20-Year-Old Barcelona Goalkeeper Passes Away

At just 20 years old, Ecuadorian goalkeeper Justin Cornejo from Barcelona SC has passed away in Guayaquil. The team’s press service announced this news on Facebook.

“Words cannot express the pain we feel. Justin’s memory will give us strength to get through this. Justin, you will forever remain in our hearts. Rest in peace, friend. We love you so much,” the statement read.

In the comments of the post, club fans offered their condolences and urged players to win in honor of their teammate. Details surrounding the incident have not been reported. According to local media, the athlete reportedly fell in his home, hitting his head strongly in the bathroom. He was found unconscious and rushed to the hospital in extremely critical condition. Doctors fought for his life, but were unable to save him, and he passed away the next day.

Cornejo was a product of Barcelona SC's youth academy and served as the backup goalkeeper for the team. He had also played one match for the Ecuadorian youth national team.
