Subterranean Cave Discovered on the Moon for Base Construction

A team of astronomers from Italy and the USA has discovered evidence of a cave on the Moon, which due to its location, could be suitable for the construction of a lunar base. This research was published on July 15 in the journal Nature Astronomy.

The cave was successfully identified in the region of the 'Sea of Serenity' using data from the LRO reconnaissance orbiters. Their analysis revealed the presence of a cavernous channel in this area.

Based on this, it is suggested that the pit in the 'Sea of Serenity' is a promising site for a lunar base that could shelter inhabitants from the harsh conditions on the surface of Earth's satellite and assist in long-term human exploration of the Moon.

Scientists have also noted that other potential subterranean openings have been discovered on the lunar surface, which are intriguing in terms of their potential for habitation. It remains generally unclear whether these provide necessary access to the cavernous channels beneath, which could lead to vast underground spaces.
