Yerevan Metro to Fully Abolish Tokens Starting January 2025

The Yerevan Metro named after Karen Demirchyan will completely transition to a new payment system and will abolish tokens starting in January 2025. This information was provided to Sputnik Armenia by the metro's press service.

“For now, there is still one turnstile at all stations that accepts tokens, and it will remain operational until residents get accustomed to the new system,” stated Tatyana Khachatryan, the metro's press secretary.

The metro has already joined the unified payment system for public transport fares, and it is now possible to pay fares not only with tokens but also via an app or through QR code invoices. The metro's operations are serviced by the “Tel-Cell” company, which has already installed the necessary equipment.

“Cashiers will not be reduced, as the implementation of new technologies is not accessible to everyone (elderly people, tourists, etc.), and they will need assistance,” the press secretary noted.

Initially, the launch of the unified payment system for public transport fares was scheduled for September 1, 2024, but it was later postponed until the end of October or early November 2024. Now, the city administration has decided that the new fare payment method will come into effect on January 1, 2025.
