Ararat Mirzoyan's Assault Case: Defendant's Custody Measure Changed to House Arrest
The custody measure for Torgom Asatryan, the defendant in the assault case against Ararat Mirzoyan, has been changed. The Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, presided over by Judge Zhora Chichoyan, partially granted the defense's request and replaced Asatryan's custody measure with house arrest.
According to 'Factinfo,' the court session regarding the incidents that followed the capitulatory act on the night of November 9-10, 2020, during which former National Assembly President Ararat Mirzoyan was assaulted, took place at the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction. In this instance, Torgom Asatryan, the 'MMA' champion, is in the status of the accused, charged with attempting to murder Ararat Mirzoyan with the intent to stop his activities.
Torgom Asatryan has been in custody since February 2023. The part of the case concerning the attempted murder of Ararat Mirzoyan related to Asatryan has been pending in court for a considerable time and is currently in the stage of major hearings. Key witnesses, including Mirzoyan's security personnel, have been interrogated in the case; however, they did not mention the accused in their testimonies regarding the events of that day.
In fact, no witness in this case has stated that they saw the accused at the time of the incident. During today’s session, the interrogation of two summoned witnesses was also planned but did not take place since the witnesses are not currently in the country. Subsequently, the defense raised the issue of changing Torgom Asatryan’s custody measure, arguing that the witnesses have already been interrogated, and therefore, the grounds for detention due to potential influence on them have been removed. Thus, they requested to change the custody measure to house arrest.
The court decided to grant the request partially, selecting house arrest as the custody measure.
