UN Security Council to Discuss Impact of Russian Strikes on Kyiv Children's Hospital

On Tuesday, the UN Security Council will discuss the impact of Russian strikes on a children's hospital in Kyiv. This was reported to Reuters by diplomatic sources.

On Monday, Russia conducted a missile strike on the children's hospital in Kyiv and subjected other Ukrainian cities to similar attacks. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the death toll from a massive missile attack on civilians in Ukraine has reached 37. Among the deceased are three children, and another 170 people, including 13 children, were injured.

“In total, nearly 100 objects have been damaged, including a children's hospital, residential houses, kindergartens, a maternity ward, a college, and a business center,” the head of state said.

On Monday, July 8, Russian troops launched approximately 40 missiles of various types towards Ukraine. Kyiv, Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Pokrovsk, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk were targeted. This attack has become the deadliest in 2024 by the number of casualties.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the Russian strikes. He described the missile attacks on the children's hospital and another healthcare facility as “particularly shocking.” Stefan Dujarric reported that “attacks on civilians and civilian objects are prohibited by international humanitarian law. Any such attack is unacceptable and must cease immediately,” stated Guterres' spokesperson.

The Security Council meeting will be convened on Tuesday morning at the request of the UK, France, Ecuador, Slovenia, and the US. “We will condemn Russia's cowardly attack on the hospital,” said Barbara Woodward, the UK's permanent representative to the UN, on X.

The Russian Defense Ministry stated that its forces targeted Ukraine's defense industry objects and airbases, denying accusations of shelling civilians. Despite this, Reuters emphasizes that thousands of civilians have been killed by Russian forces since the invasion began in February 2022.
