Around 1000 Armenian Trucks Near Upper Lars: Attaché Provides Details
The situation at the Upper Lars border crossing is gradually improving, and queues are disappearing. This was stated by Vahan Hakobyan, the customs attaché of the Armenian Embassy in Russia, to Sputnik Armenia.
Sputnik Georgia reported that over 3000 trucks had accumulated at the Russian-Georgian border, with individuals on social media noting that they had to wait around 10 hours for their turn. The congestion was attributed to the start of the tourist season, which saw a sharp increase in the number of tourists crossing the border.
“Currently, we have about 500 trucks in the Armenia-Russia direction, some of which are in Georgian territory, while others are already being processed at the Upper Lars border crossing. We have the same number of trucks in the opposite direction,” Hakobyan said.
He noted that there are currently no traffic limitations, and Armenian goods are being processed without hindrance.
It is worth mentioning that Georgia is constructing a new road that bypasses the most dangerous section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway (the Gudauri-Kobi stretch). This involves a nine-kilometer tunnel. The project includes the construction of a 23-kilometer-long dual concrete road, five bridges, and five tunnels. Upon completion, transportation from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (at the border with Russia) will take 1 hour and 45 minutes (currently it takes 2 hours and 30 minutes). As a result, smooth traffic will be ensured throughout the year.
