A Rotten Egg Smell Comes from an Exoplanet Outside the Solar System: Scientists Identify the Cause
The exoplanet HD 189733b, located 64 light-years away from Earth, has long intrigued astronomers due to its scorching temperatures, high winds, and rain made of glass. Observations from the James Webb Space Telescope have revealed another interesting characteristic of the planet: it emits a smell akin to rotten eggs, CNN reports.
During studies of the exoplanet's atmosphere, traces of hydrogen sulfide were detected. Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas known for its powerful sulfuric odor, and this is the first time it has been found outside our solar system.
HD 189733b was discovered in 2005 and later earned the nickname 'hot Jupiter.'
