Napoleon's Pistols, Used in His Suicide Attempt, Sold at Auction for €1.69 Million

At auction, two pistols belonging to French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, which he once attempted to use in a suicide attempt, were sold for €1.69 million, according to BBC.

The pistols were sold at the Osénat auction house, located near the Palace of Fontainebleau. Recently adorned with gold and silver, these pistols, which bear the image of Napoleon, were classified by the French Ministry of Culture as national treasures, leading to a prohibition on their export.

This means that the French government now has 30 months to make a purchase offer to the new owner, whose identity has not been disclosed.

It is reported that Napoleon wished to take his own life with these pistols on the night of April 12, 1814, following his army's defeat, which forced him to abdicate the throne.
