Macron Rejects Prime Minister's Resignation and Asks Him to Continue Serving
The President of France, Emmanuel Macron, has requested Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to continue in his duties as head of government. This information was reported by BFMTV.
Attal had resigned the day after the parliamentary snap elections, when President Macron's coalition failed to secure a first-place finish.
“Macron has asked Attal to stay on as Prime Minister for the time being to ensure stability in the country,” notes the channel, citing the presidential administration.
It is worth recalling that on July 7, France held the second round of voting in the National Assembly (the lower house of parliament) snap elections. Preliminary data indicates that the left-wing coalition “New Popular Front” won the parliamentary elections, securing 181 of the 577 seats in the National Assembly. The “Together” coalition led by Macron took second place with 168 seats, while Marine Le Pen's “National Rally” ended up in third with 143 seats.
The President of France is to appoint a new Prime Minister who must gain the support of the newly formed parliament.
