Attempts to Strip the People of Their Constitutional Inalienable Rights: The Speaker of Parliament's Address

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia, Alen Simonyan, has sent a congratulatory address on the occasion of Constitution Day, stating:

“Dear compatriots,

As law-abiding citizens of the Republic of Armenia, on July 5, we celebrate the day of our mother law—Constitution Day. 29 years ago, on this day, many of us, our mothers and sisters, fathers and brothers, adopted the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia through a nationwide referendum, enshrining the nature of the Republic of Armenia as a sovereign, democratic, legal, and social state and declaring the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals and citizens.

Article 2 of the Constitution enshrines that power in the Republic of Armenia belongs to the people. Despite periodic attempts by certain centers and groups to strip the people of their inalienable constitutional rights, recent events have once again highlighted the wisdom of our people, proving that power indeed belongs to the people in the Republic of Armenia.

Dear compatriots, as the President of the National Assembly and as a representative of a political team that has adopted a clear democratic course, I share many of the concerns that trouble you, that despite the provisions enshrined in the Constitution, there are still certain legislative gaps in various areas that often cause discomfort, and at times, a feeling of being unprotected before the law for many of you.

While congratulating you on Constitution Day, I want to reiterate our determination to move forward on the democratic path and assure you that the National Assembly will spare no effort in its legislative activities to make your lives more prosperous, dignified, and comfortable.”
