U.S. Military Bases in Europe on High Alert Due to Possible Terror Threat, CNN Reports

U.S. military bases in Europe have been placed on heightened alert due to a potential terrorist threat. Security levels have been raised to the second-highest level amid fears that a terrorist attack could target U.S. military personnel or facilities. This information was reported by CNN, citing two American officials.

Officials stated that bases, including the U.S. Army garrison in Stuttgart, Germany, which hosts U.S. European Command, have elevated their alert status to the mandatory defense "Charlie" level. This status is implemented when an incident occurs or intelligence information indicates a likelihood of a terrorist act or attack against personnel or facilities.

One U.S. official stationed in Europe told CNN that they have not seen such a high level of threat in "at least 10 years," adding that it typically means that military personnel have received information regarding an "active, credible threat." CNN clarifies that it remains unclear what intelligence prompted the heightened security measures, however, European authorities have warned of potential terrorist threats leading up to the Olympic Games in Paris and during the ongoing European football championship.
