Video: One Dead Following Collapse of Delhi Airport Roof
At least one person has died and six others have been injured after part of the roof at Delhi Airport collapsed this morning during heavy rainfall, crashing down onto parked vehicles. All flights scheduled to depart from the Indira Gandhi International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, have been canceled until 2:00 PM local time, according to Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjirabun following an inspection of the airport.
Officials reported that the roof and supporting pillars caved in, damaging four cars in the passenger pick-up and landing area. The Delhi Fire Services (HDFS) received reports of the incident around 5:30 AM. Rescue operations revealed a man being pulled from under a metal sheet that had fallen on him.
The newly appointed Minister of Civil Aviation, Mr. Kinjirabun, stated that flights scheduled to depart after 2:00 PM will operate from the airport's other two terminals, Terminal 2 and Terminal 3. He said, “After the accident at Delhi’s T1 terminal this morning, I personally checked the facility. Our priority was the safe evacuation of all passengers from the terminal. Consequently, all flights scheduled before 2:00 PM have been canceled. Passengers will receive full compensation or will have the opportunity to book tickets for alternative flights and routes.”
He added, “I will ensure that experts conduct a thorough investigation into the terminal's structure to ensure safety.” He also mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is “closely monitoring” the situation and assured full support.
