Investigations Conclude on Kamaz Driver Incident at Republic Square
The investigation into the incident involving a Kamaz truck driver committing apparent hooliganism during the rally organized by the 'Tavush for the Homeland' initiative at Republic Square on May 9, 2024, has been completed.
The driver, a 40-year-old resident of the Ararat region, had prior knowledge of the rally taking place in Yerevan's Republic Square on May 9, 2024. While in a state of intoxication and disregarding the prohibitory traffic sign, around 21:00, he drove his Kamaz 54112 truck along Italy Street towards the intersection of Khorenatsi and Vazgen Sargsyan streets. He veered off the one-way traffic lane of Vazgen Sargsyan Street, bypassed police officers from the RA Ministry of Internal Affairs, and ignored their orders to stop, heading directly towards the rally participants at Republic Square, where he parked his vehicle in the center of the square. Through his unlawful and immoral actions, demonstrating a blatant disregard for social coexistence rules, he caused distress to the individuals present in the square, disturbing their peace.
Based on sufficient evidence collected during the pre-trial investigation by the first department of the investigative division for the Center and Norq-Marash administrative regions of the Yerevan Investigative Committee, charges were filed against the truck driver under part 1 of Article 297 of the RA Criminal Code. The pre-trial investigation has concluded, and the materials of the case have been sent to the supervising prosecutor for the confirmation of the indictment and submission to the court.
Notice: The accused in the crime is presumed innocent until proven guilty in accordance with the procedure established by the RA Criminal Procedure Code, by a court decision that has entered into legal force.
