Prosecution Launched Against Individuals After Clashes Near the National Assembly

On June 12, during a protest in the intersection of Baghramyan and Demirchyan streets in Yerevan, criminal prosecution has been initiated against 16 individuals following clashes. This information has been reported by the Investigative Committee of Armenia.

On June 17, the committee revealed that prosecution had been launched against 12 individuals for committing apparent mass disturbances and hooliganism during the protest. The body conducting the proceedings submitted requests to the supervising prosecutor for public prosecution for hooliganism against 15 participants, and for participation in mass disturbances against 1 individual, which were approved, and they have been charged accordingly.

For 8 of the accused, a detention measure has been selected, for 5, house arrest, for 2, a prohibition on leaving has been applied, and 1 individual is under administrative supervision.

The Investigative Committee notes that a separate criminal case has been initiated regarding the proportionality and legality of the actions of police officers who were performing duties to protect public order and secure protected areas during the events at the intersection of Baghramyan and Demirchyan streets. An investigative group has been formed. Within the framework of the preliminary investigation, several individuals, including 8 journalists, have been recognized as victims, and the process is ongoing.

As a reminder, clashes began on June 12 near the National Assembly building between police and members and supporters of the “Tavush for the Homeland” movement. The police used sound grenades, resulting in injuries to 101 individuals, including police officers.
