Hail Destroys Agarak's Potato, Wheat, and Lentil Fields, Says Community Leader
Recent heavy rains and hail have caused significant damage to agriculture in the village of Agarak. A commission has been formed to assess the damages, but preliminary reports indicate that about 50 percent of the expected harvest has been affected.
“I’m saying this approximately without experts,” Agarak community administrative leader Kristine Melikjanyan told Factinfo, adding that “93-100 hectares of potatoes, 80 hectares of wheat, 30 hectares of corn, and lentil fields have been damaged, as well as home gardens.”
The village does not have intensive orchards but has home gardens with apples, plums, and pears. Residents say, “the hail has taken everything, nothing is left.” Livestock feed has also been damaged; they had beets, and there were sunflowers and corn in home plots, but now there is nothing,” said the administrative leader.
According to her, the hail that fell the day before was quite large—almost the size of eggs—and was followed by continuous wind and light, but persistent hail. There are areas where the wind has uprooted trees.
