Attack on Enerhodar Substation Affects Nuclear Safety, IAEA Says

The damage inflicted on the Enerhodar 'Luch' substation due to a drone attack has impacted nuclear safety, said Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Friday.

‘The damage to the 'Luch' substation directly affected the personnel residing in Enerhodar (in the immediate vicinity of the facility) and, consequently, has also affected nuclear safety,’ Grossi’s agency stated in a press release. He also spoke about the necessity of protecting energy infrastructure.

On June 19, the administration of Enerhodar reported that the city was left without electricity due to shelling of the substation by the Ukrainian armed forces. 'The reason for the emergency power outage is that enemy drones struck the 'Luch' substation,' stated the administration's Telegram channel.

Mayor Eduard Senovoz mentioned that the substation has been destroyed. 'The primary infrastructure, the 'Luch' substation that supplies the city, has been damaged; in addition to the substation being hit by drones, artillery hits have been recorded near the high-voltage line,' the mayor clarified.

Enerhodar is home to the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.
