Red Alert Issued in India Due to Heavy Rainfall

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has declared a maximum red alert in the northeastern states of Assam and Meghalaya, as well as in the northern state of Arunachal Pradesh, due to continuous heavy rainfall. More than 20 lives have been lost as a result of the flooding. This was reported by Armenpress, citing TASS agency.

In the past day, much of the area in these states has recorded unprecedented rainfall, with daily levels reaching between 47 to 78 cm in certain regions. Assam has been significantly impacted by the deluge, where torrential rain and consequent flooding and landslides have resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals.

The swelling of the Brahmaputra River has led to flooding in 459 rural localities, affecting 412,000 residents. More than 1 million people have been evacuated from the flooded zones and accommodated in 240 temporary camps. The rains in Assam have also resulted in the destruction of irrigation structures and roadways, as well as prolonged power outages.
