Finland's Parliament Approves Bill on Border with Russia
The Finnish Parliament has approved a bill regarding the border with Russia. The bill stipulates that individuals arriving in Finland from the Russian border may face expulsion if their request for asylum is denied. Finnish Prime Minister has suggested that if the law is enacted, it could lead to the opening of the border with Russia.
The Constitutional Law Committee of the Finnish Parliament voted in favor of the expulsion bill, which would temporarily prohibit individuals from seeking international protection at Finland's borders, as reported by Helsingin Sanomat (HS).
The bill received support from 15 members of the committee, while 2 voted against it. The publication notes that legal experts consulted by the committee did not defend the bill. Experts surveyed by HS indicated that the document raises questions from the perspectives of international human rights treaties, EU legislation, and the Finnish Constitution, and it would be challenging to address these issues within parliamentary procedures.
