A Citizen in Azerbaijan Dies Following Torture in Police Station
A resident of Sumgayit, Azerbaijan, Elvin Iskenderov, has died in the first police station of the city. His family members have informed media outlets that Iskenderov died as a result of torture.
It has been reported that the 37-year-old Elvin Iskenderov was taken to the police station on the night of June 14 by several individuals, including his brothers. On the night of June 15, relatives who went to the police for his brothers were informed about Elvin's death.
According to family members, there were signs of violence and bodily injuries on Elvin's body, leading them to believe that he was killed as a result of torture. The brothers of Elvin, who were present at the police station that night, recounted that everyone was subjected to beatings, and that the police struck Elvin on the head. One of the brothers, Turkhana, stated that he personally witnessed the beating of his brother, after which Elvin lost his balance and fell to the ground. "The police said he was faking it," he noted.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs has denied the claims made by Elvin Iskenderov's relatives. In a statement from the press service of the department, it was mentioned that Elvin Iskenderov died from liver cirrhosis and a heart attack. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the police had received information about a conflict between several individuals in a Sumgayit café who were in an intoxicated state. Based on this information, the police entered the café around 11:30 PM and took the participants to the police station.
