Pashinyan on Starting the Next Phase of Border Demarcation from Syunik
Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan responded to a question from "Liberty" in the village of Kornidzor regarding the possibility of starting the next phase of border demarcation from Syunik: "Yes, it is possible, but it is also possible in any other territory."
"You know that at this moment we are working on a draft of the regulations, and according to the preliminary agreement, it is also fixed in the record of April 19 that after the approval of the regulations, the commissions will determine where it is," Pashinyan noted.
"I want to draw your attention to another matter; see, I have been in the Syunik region since yesterday and have had dozens of meetings in both border and non-border settlements. It is clear that the agenda of peace, the real agenda of Armenia, and the agenda of peace have been perceived by our people. This is very important, very important for me, especially for this record, and it means that we have been able to communicate to our people what we are doing and why we are doing it, which is very important," the Prime Minister emphasized.
In this context, according to Pashinyan, "the issues of border demarcation and other issues become working questions, which, of course, the Government must continue to widely inform the public about what is happening, why it is happening, what its purpose is, what the complexities are, what the risks are, how we can manage those risks, and with those methodologies, we must continue to move forward."
Partial border demarcation took place in the Tavush-Ghazakh section, with Armenia returning four villages demanded by Azerbaijan without receiving the Armenian territories located opposite Berkaber that passed under Azerbaijani control during the 1990s conflict. In that area, the border demarcation was not implemented.
The Prime Minister did not specify which areas will be the next to be demarcated. He only announced that the commissions are currently agreeing on the regulations for joint work, which must be signed and then go through domestic procedures, after which the border demarcation should continue. According to the agreement, the approval must be completed by July 1.
