NATO Secretary General Calls for Readiness of Alliance's Nuclear Arsenal
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has announced that alliance countries are negotiating the deployment of more nuclear weapons and bringing them to a state of readiness, citing "the threats from Russia and China," reports the British newspaper The Telegraph.
"I will not go into operational details regarding how many nuclear warheads need to be brought to readiness and which ones should be maintained; we need to consult on these issues. That is what we are doing," he stated to the paper.
The Secretary General advocated for transparency in NATO’s nuclear strategy, noting that it should be the cornerstone of its deterrent policy.
According to him, "NATO’s goal is, of course, a world without nuclear weapons, but as long as nuclear weapons exist, we will remain a nuclear alliance." He added that "transparency helps to convey that clear message."
