Azerbaijan Calls Kiran and Voskepar Churches 'Albanian', Responds to Ongoing Construction Work

Monument Watch raises alarm: For a considerable time now, Azerbaijani circles have been referring to the eastern and southern regions of the Republic of Armenia as 'Western Azerbaijan'. We have previously addressed, for example, the 'Return to Western Azerbaijan' festival held in Nakhichevan on November 23-24, 2023, which was preceded by a conference titled 'The Road Leading to Western Azerbaijan'.

Additionally, on December 15, an exhibition titled 'Western Azerbaijan in Cultural Memory' opened at Azerbaijan's National Museum of Art. Last year, a television channel named 'Western Azerbaijan' was launched, and prior to that, several new platforms in the Azerbaijani media sphere were already using the name 'Western Azerbaijan'. Through these and other instruments, the Azerbaijani propaganda machine is attempting to portray Armenian territory as Azerbaijani, promote racial discrimination, and present Armenian culture as Albanian and Turkic.

For detailed insights, see the videos from the 'Western Azerbaijan Community' organization appealing to UNESCO for the prevention of the destruction of 'Western Azerbaijan' cultural heritage, as well as the new attempts of 'appropriation of historical-cultural heritage'. The Azerbaijani Republic's aggressive policy is once again manifesting in declaring Yerevan, Lake Sevan, and Syunik as 'Azerbaijani heritage'.
