In Karkop, Residents Bring Drinking Water from the Destroyed Bridge, Says Administrative Leader

In Karkop, water supply has been partially restored. Residents are fetching drinking water from near the destroyed bridge. This was reported today, June 11, in an interview with NEWS.am by Karkop's administrative leader, Hermine Petrosyan.

"The pedestrian bridge has been removed from the water, but a lot of work remains to be done on it," said the administrative leader, noting that villagers continue to travel via the Akhtala bridge.

"It is still impossible to live on the ground floors of the buildings; they are damp. There is still no electricity on the first floors because it's dangerous. The sewage issue has not been resolved either. We hope that soon the sewage problem will be addressed, and at least half of the residents will be able to live on the second and third floors," Hermine Petrosyan mentioned, adding that some residents have already returned to their homes, most likely due to not finding alternative shelter.

Residents who returned to Karkop continue to carry out cleaning works in the city.

Speaking about compensation for damages, Hermine Petrosyan stated that the inventory work has been completed, but she is still unaware of the compensation process.

When asked if the residents of Karkop are planning to return to their homes and restore the orchards, Hermine Petrosyan responded, "Of course, they want to. Even children can't live in neighboring villages; they want to return home soon. But there are orchards where nothing is left; the water has swept everything away, only stones remain. Years of hard work were washed away. It wasn't just a year or two of suffering; it was 30 years of hardship."

The administrative leader of Karkop herself does not know how the residents will survive, as their only source of income comes from the money earned from the orchards. "I can't say. Maybe if they have government jobs, they will survive on that until we see what happens," she added.
