80 Percent of Thermal Power Generation Destroyed in Ukraine
According to President Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine has recently lost 9 GW of power. About 80% of thermal power generation and one-third of hydro generation in Ukraine have been destroyed, as reported by President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“80% of thermal production and one-third of hydropower have simply been destroyed,” he stated while opening a conference in Berlin dedicated to the reconstruction of Ukraine. Zelensky noted that Ukraine has been deprived of 9 GW of capacity in recent times. He added that Kyiv has a "clear plan" to build up to 1 GW of gas production this year, and an additional 4 GW in the coming years.
Earlier, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced that at present, 62 energy blocks of Ukraine's hydro and thermal power plants have been destroyed, including 20 hydropower blocks that produced 1.3 GW of electricity and are now non-operational.
At the beginning of May, limitations were imposed on industrial facilities due to a network deficit in the country, and citizens were urged not to turn on energy-consuming devices during peak hours. However, these measures were not sufficient, and soon schedules for power outages began to be regularly prepared for all household consumers across the country.
Since early June, Ukraine has had to significantly increase electricity imports from abroad, with the first days of the month seeing imports exceeding May figures by one third.
