Shelters, Hospitals, Food: Germany Prepares for War Against Russia
The German government has developed a plan in case of war with Russia, reports the German publication Bild. Just the day before, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced that the country must prepare for armed conflict within the next five years.
According to Bild, the plan is tentatively titled "Framework Directive for General Defense" and is a revised guideline from 1989. The government’s plan includes the following measures in the event of military operations:
- Deployment of NATO troops through German territory to the eastern flank, where Bundeswehr forces are concentrated.
- Calling up German citizens for military service at any time and returning them to military duty.
- A prohibition on the dissolution of the Bundestag during military operations.
- Turning basements, underground parking lots, and metro stations into temporary shelters for the population.
- Emergency evacuation of certain areas of Germany if necessary, strictly without separating families.
- Preparing hospitals for a sudden influx of "a large number of patients for an extended period."
- Rationing of food supplies by the Ministry of Food in case of shortages due to supply crises, including grain, barley, and oats being stocked in secret locations organized by the government.
- Creating emergency reserves of rice, legumes, and condensed dairy products to ensure residents in major cities have one hot meal per day.
- Shift of companies to produce goods solely for military needs.
- Mandatory work may be required from citizens aged 18 and over in postal services or bakeries, as well as caring for the sick.
As reported by Der Spiegel, on June 5, Pistorius stated in the Bundestag that the country must be prepared for a potential war by 2029. He remarked that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not be limited to Ukraine and that his next targets could include Georgia, Moldova, and then NATO countries.
