600 Trucks Piled Up at Upper Lars Due to Road Closure

Due to the closure of the road at the Lars checkpoint, 600 trucks have already piled up. The information was provided to Sputnik Armenia by Vahan Hakobyan, a customs advisor in Russia.

It has been reported that the road leading to the Upper Lars checkpoint was closed today for all vehicles. "We have about 300 trucks on the way from Armenia to Russia and the same number in the opposite direction," said Hakobyan.

It is important to note that Georgia is constructing a road to bypass the most dangerous section of the Mtskheta-Stepantsminda-Lars highway (Gudauri-Kobi). This involves a nine-kilometer tunnel.

The details of the alternative road construction project to Lars have been presented in Georgia. The project envisions the construction of a two-layer concrete road 23 kilometers long, along with 5 bridges and 5 tunnels. Once completed in 2024, vehicles will be able to travel from Tbilisi to Stepantsminda (the border with Russia) in 1 hour and 45 minutes, down from the current 2 hours and 30 minutes. As a result, uninterrupted traffic flow will be ensured throughout the year.
