Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Resigns

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has submitted his resignation in conjunction with his cabinet, as reported by the government’s press service.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with President Draupadi Murmu today and submitted his resignation along with the council of ministers. The President has accepted the resignation and requested Narendra Modi and the council of ministers to continue their work until the new government takes office,” the statement said.

Modi has held the prime ministership since May 2014. The resignation is of a technical nature. From April to June 2024, parliamentary elections were held in the country, with a record participation of 642 million people. As a result, the Indian National Congress (INC), primarily represented by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) led by Modi, secured the majority of seats, clinching 292 out of 543. Although this result did not align with Modi’s party's target (370 seats for the party and 400 for the INC), it marks the worst performance in the last 15 years. The main competitor of the INC, the opposition India alliance, will occupy 231 seats in the new parliament.
