Charles III's Banknotes Introduced into Circulation from June 5, 2024
Banknotes featuring the portrait of King Charles III were introduced into circulation for the first time on June 5, 2024. The King's portrait is present on all four banknotes.
Banknotes featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II will remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the banknotes of King Charles III. The new banknotes of King Charles III will only be printed to replace worn banknotes and to meet the overall increase in demand for banknotes.
Our approach aligns with recommendations from the royal court aimed at minimizing the environmental and financial implications of this change,” writes the Bank of England.
