A Child of Unknown Gender Born in Tyumen

According to doctors, this is a very rare diagnosis, but it is possible to rectify the situation. Over the past year, a case of a child born with an indeterminate gender has been registered in the Tyumen region. This is a rare genetic mutation where a person’s external and internal sexual organs do not conform to either female or male. The reasons for such disorders in children are usually related to mutations in several genes involved in the process of gonadal placement.

Congenital defects are among the most serious deviations in children's health. The frequency of congenital anomalies has increased by 18.8% compared to 2022, and abnormalities are more frequently detected in boys, reported Tyumen health officials. As for the diagnosis of "disorder of sexual development," the situation can be rectified through surgical intervention following genetic analysis to confirm the chromosomal set and clarify the genetic sex. It is extremely difficult to predict whether such a child will become a parent in adulthood.

In 2022, three newborns were diagnosed with "disorder of sexual development." In 2021, two such children were born. There was only one such case in 2020, three in 2019, and none in 2018. A few years ago, Tyumen doctors performed a unique surgery for a child with an indeterminate gender. A rare condition, hypospadias, was diagnosed in a one-and-a-half-year-old child. This is the most complex defect of the urinary and reproductive systems. After testing, it was determined that the newborn is, in fact, a boy. His sexual organs were restored to conform with male organs.
