Biden Suggests Ukraine May Not Join NATO
U.S. President Joe Biden has suggested that Ukraine may remain outside of NATO following the conclusion of its military conflict with Russia, but Washington will continue to supply it with weaponry. His remarks were quoted by Time.
“The world for Ukraine is that Russia never takes Ukraine. That’s what the world looks like. And that doesn’t mean they are part of NATO,” Biden stated. He emphasized that Washington is building a relationship with Kyiv similar to that with other countries to which it supplies arms, so they can “defend themselves in the future.”
Meanwhile, the British newspaper The Telegraph reported that ahead of a meeting dedicated to NATO's 75th anniversary, there has been resistance within NATO to setting strict timelines for Ukraine’s membership. According to the publication, U.S. officials are highly skeptical about Kyiv moving toward full membership in the alliance anytime soon.
Earlier, Secretary of State Antony Blinken had promised Ukraine a “bridge” to NATO.
