No Need for Fundraising: Lori Region Governor Discusses Flooding
There is no need for fundraising for those affected by the flooding in northern Armenia. This was stated by Lori region governor Aram Ghazaryan during a press briefing with journalists at the Alaverdi city hall, which is part of the operational headquarters managing the consequences of the flooding.
"The state is capable of addressing all issues arising for the population; there is enough food, clothing, and economic goods available for the residents at the disposal of the operational headquarters," he added.
The governor noted that most residents of the affected houses are still unable to return, even while their homes and yards are being cleaned of mud and sand; time is needed for the walls and furniture to dry.
According to the governor, cleaning operations have been completed in the Alaverdi and Akhtala communities, but continue in Sanahin and the village of Karkop, which suffered the most from the flooding. Seven settlements on the other side of the Debed River are having crushed stones added to their dirt road to make it passable for all types of vehicles (currently, only trucks and SUVs can travel that road). This road now serves as an alternative to the destroyed bridges until they are reconstructed.
It should be reminded that after the heavy rains on May 26, four people lost their lives due to the flooding of the Debed, Akhtsu, and Tashir rivers in the Lori and Tavush regions. A decision has been made to declare the affected areas in Lori and Tavush regions as disaster zones and allocate 300 million dram to the regional administrations for addressing the aftermath of the floods.
