Zelensky Explains Why He Doesn't Want to Freeze the Conflict

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that if the conflict with Russia were to be frozen in the future, it would inevitably flare up again. This was reported by the British newspaper The Guardian.

As the head of state noted, a frozen conflict represents a slow war. He emphasized that at some point, there could be a reason for resuming the active phase of military operations.

“There will come a moment when all of this will be frozen for one reason or another,” Zelensky stressed. In his opinion, the cessation of military operations would benefit Moscow, but not Kyiv. The Russian side would use that time to strengthen its positions on the battlefield and understand what resources its army is lacking. “We know this. We have the same deficit; we discuss it openly,” the Ukrainian president added.

He did not rule out that if the conflict were to freeze, the Russian armed forces might further strengthen. At that time, Moscow would have grounds to impose numerous conditions on Kyiv, including recognizing territorial losses and renouncing NATO and EU membership, the head of state summarized.

On May 25, Zelensky stated that he does not intend to negotiate a ceasefire with the Russian authorities. According to the Ukrainian leader, such an agreement would only make sense if the military personnel of both states were located along the borders.
