Proposal to Disband the Knesset in Israel

Israeli parliamentarians have submitted a bill to dissolve the Knesset following calls from the opposition for early elections, reports the Times of Israel.

“October 7 was a disaster that demands us to turn back and earn the trust of the people. We need to build a broad and stable unity government that will lead us to security amid immense security and economic challenges within Israeli society,” said the bill's author, MP Pnina Tamano-Shata, from Benny Gantz's National Unity party.

In April, Gantz himself called for early elections to be held by September 2024. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party has rejected the proposal.

“In times of war, Israel needs unity, not division. The dissolution of the National Unity Government would be a gift to (Hamas leader) Yahya Sinwar, yielding to international pressure and undermining efforts to free hostages faced by a fatal blow,” stated a Likud announcement.
