Georgia Will Face Consequences for Passing Foreign Agents Law, U.S. State Department

The U.S. State Department has condemned the Georgian Parliament's decision to override the presidential veto placed on the foreign agents law. According to Washington, this move removes the republic from the path of European integration and disregards the "Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Georgian people," stated State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller.

The official underscored that the ruling party in Georgia has ignored the conclusions of the Venice Commission regarding the foreign agents law and the stance of "Georgia's closest partners."

“The actions of the ruling party... undermine Georgia’s 'democratic trajectory', its future economic security, its UN membership, and jeopardize U.S.-Georgia relations,” Miller said. He reminded that Secretary of State Antony Blinken had warned that Georgia would face consequences should the foreign agents law be adopted.

On May 28, the Georgian Parliament overcame President Salome Zourabichvili's veto on the foreign agents law. The lawmakers voted in favor of the initial version of the law, with 84 voting for and four against.

The “Transparency of Foreign Influence” law will come into effect the day after being published on the Legislative Register website.
