Zakhrova on the Natural Disaster in Armenia
From May 25-26, precipitation in the northern regions of Armenia exceeded the monthly norm. Reports indicate casualties, missing persons, and significant material damages. Several communities, as well as transportation and energy infrastructure facilities, have been affected by flooding. Rail and road connections with the affected areas have been disrupted. This was stated by Maria Zakharova, the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, responding to the natural disaster and its consequences in Armenia.
“We sincerely express our condolences to the fraternal Armenian people regarding the natural disaster that has befallen the republic, and we wish a swift recovery to those affected. On May 26, the Russian-Armenian Humanitarian Response Center provided the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia with mobile pumps for use in search and rescue and emergency recovery operations. There are currently 50 units of equipment previously provided by the response center operating in the Lori and Tavush regions to eliminate the consequences of the flooding.
The center's leadership is in constant contact with the National Center for Crisis Management of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia, as well as with the rapid response headquarters for flood consequences in the Lori and Tavush regions. If necessary, the center is prepared to engage additional forces and resources, as well as provide humanitarian assistance to the affected population,” she stated. Zakharova also added, “The Russian Embassy in Yerevan and the Consulate General in Gyumri are in communication with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Armenia and the leadership of Lori, Tavush, and Shirak regions to provide additional assistance and to identify citizens of the Russian Federation among the affected.”
