Protests Against the 'Foreign Agents' Law Continue in Tbilisi
Protests against the 'Foreign Agents' law are taking place in Tbilisi. The demonstration coincides with Georgia's Independence Day, as reported by Paper Kartuli.
It is noted that protesters have blocked Melikishvili Avenue. Today, on May 26, the President of the country, Salome Zurabishvili, addressed a crowd in Freedom Square. She stated that "the shadow of Russia hangs over Georgia," and emphasized the need for "partnership and rapprochement with the United States and Europe to preserve independence and peace."
Her words were quoted by the Liberty Radio Station. "In the European environment, our country has the opportunity to maintain its independence and achieve development. It is astonishing that today I need to convince someone who is a friend, who is an enemy. We know who has taken our territories, who violates our sovereignty," Zurabishvili said.
On the occasion of Independence Day, the Prime Minister and leader of the Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze, also delivered a speech. He stated that Georgia plans to reclaim Abkhazia and South Ossetia and aims to join the EU by 2030.
At the same time, as noted by Paper Kartuli, a woman who shouted "No to the Russian regime" during Kobakhidze's speech was taken away by the police, who covered her mouth with their hands.
