John Iñarritu: Actions of Baku in the Past Raise Doubts About Its Sincerity in Ongoing Negotiations

The success of the ongoing demarcation and delimitation process between Armenia and Azerbaijan largely depends on the genuine commitment of both sides to fair and transparent negotiations.

In an interview with Armenpress, Spanish Congress member John Iñarritu emphasized that in the context of the demarcation process, Armenian authorities are negotiating with Azerbaijan's authoritarian regime, led by the Aliyev clan, which has a history of expansionist tendencies.

The Spanish parliamentarian noted that while negotiations are crucial for achieving a peaceful resolution to conflicts, it is important to acknowledge the complexities and underlying issues to understand the possible outcomes of this agreement (the parliamentarian refers to the agreement on demarcation and delimitation reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan on April 19).

Nevertheless, Iñarritu expressed concerns regarding the sincerity of Azerbaijan's intentions in the context of the demarcation process, stating that an agreement that does not lead to the resolution of the fundamental issues between the parties could potentially serve as a ticking time bomb rather than bringing peace and stability.

"For peace to be sustainable, the agreement must be fair, balanced, and respected by all involved parties," the parliamentarian noted.

Comparing the Armenian-Azerbaijani demarcation process and Azerbaijan's behavior regarding previously reached agreements, Iñarritu reminded of the actions taken by Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh and related agreements.

"The continued detention by Azerbaijan of representatives from the Artsakh government, civilians of Artsakh, and even individuals from third countries, such as Lebanon, based solely on their Armenian origin is a gross violation of human rights and international law. This illegal captivity underscores the systematic and discriminatory policies of the Azerbaijani regime against Armenians," he said, highlighting that such actions by Azerbaijan further emphasize the regime's disregard for fundamental human rights and its intention to intimidate and suppress the Armenian population worldwide.

The full interview with John Iñarritu will be published on May 27.
