VIDEO: The Body of Iran's President Transferred to His Hometown
The body of Ebrahim Raisi has been transferred from Birjand to the Imam Reza shrine, located in Raisi's native city of Mashhad. There, he will be honored by Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Today, Iran's Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian is also receiving farewell services in Tehran.
Earlier, mourning ceremonies were held in Tabriz, Qom, and Tehran. More than 50 representatives from various countries attended the farewell ceremony. Also present at the memorial events yesterday was Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
It is recalled that the helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian crashed on May 19 in the northwest of the country, in the Verzeghani area. The senior officials were returning from a ceremony to inaugurate hydro facilities on the Araks River, which was also attended by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
Rescue teams were dispatched to the site of the accident and searched throughout the night, a task made difficult by darkness and heavy rain. On the morning of May 20, it was reported that the burned wreckage of the helicopter had been discovered, and all individuals on board had perished.
