If the Opposition Resigns Mandates, There Will Be No Extraordinary Elections, Says Aleksanyan

If the opposition of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia resigns their mandates, it will not resolve the issue of extraordinary parliamentary elections. This was stated by the deputy of the Civil Contract Party, Vahagn Aleksanyan, during a conversation with journalists.

“They are only making statements about the process of impeachment of the Prime Minister; let them start. I regard those statements with humor. They clearly cannot initiate that process, and even if they do, it is certainly doomed to failure,” said Aleksanyan.

It should be noted that to initiate the procedure for declaring the impeachment of the Prime Minister, it is necessary to present a candidate for the Prime Minister and gather 36 signatures within 24 hours after taking the form. The opposition groups “Hayastan” and “I Have Honor” have 35 deputies; they either need to “gather” one from the ruling party or obtain the support of the only independent deputy, Ishkhan Zakaryan.

After collecting the signatures, a vote must be called within 48-72 hours. At least 54 votes are needed for impeachment, meaning the opposition must gain the support of an additional 18 deputies.
