Alen Simonyan on the Possibility of Bagrat Surbazan Becoming Prime Minister

This is absurd; firstly, no one is planning to elect Bagrat Surbazan and discuss it. Furthermore, Bagrat Surbazan has no legal right to become the Prime Minister or to nominate his candidacy. This was stated by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Alen Simonyan, in response to a question about whether the ruling party excludes Bagrat Surbazan from becoming Prime Minister.

In response to a comment that he has the right if the relevant article of the Constitution is amended, Simonyan replied, 'So, should we demolish the Constitution if the public pressures? That is unconstitutional.'

When journalists reminded him that the courts were also blocked at the call of Prime Minister Pashinyan, Simonyan said, 'If the public gathers near the court, does that become a subversion of the constitutional order? There’s no such thing, it’s not being discussed, and I’m surprised that people think that at least one person can discuss such a thing. Nothing extraordinary is happening with the authorities; we are very happy that there are political processes in Armenia.'

Addressing Bagrat Surbazan's statement about where the soldier stands being our border, Simonyan responded, 'Well, does that mean that if a clash were to occur, which is possible, between the Azerbaijani and Armenian forces, the Azerbaijani troops would stand in front of the door of the Anna church, Bagrat Surbazan would say that? Bagrat Surbazan, politics, and law are thousands of years and kilometers apart. There is a border that we are discussing. Why are we talking about dates instead of taking an abstract map since there is a legal basis recognized by Azerbaijan as well? The border of Armenia is the border by which Armenia became independent.'
