Yerevan State University Responds to Professors' Statement

Yerevan State University has clarified that information regarding more than 50 of its professors joining a statement demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is not accurate. This was announced by the university's press service.

Previously, it had been reported that over 50 professors issued a statement calling for Pashinyan's resignation and expressing support for the "Tavush for Homeland" movement.

“Oppositional media outlets are spreading information that supposedly over 50 professors of YSU have joined some unclear statement, which is not true. Despite the fact that various political forces and individuals are trying to drag Yerevan State University into political processes by distorting reality, we assure you that there is and can be no political process at YSU,” the statement emphasized.

The university noted that it is an apolitical educational institution, which continues to carry out its mission.

It is worth recalling that dissatisfied citizens have been staging protests in the Tavush region for an extended time due to issues surrounding the Armenia-Azerbaijan border delimitation. On May 4, members and supporters of the “Tavush for Homeland” movement decided to march from the village of Kiran to Yerevan. They reached the capital on May 9, where a rally took place in Republic Square. During this event, the leader of the movement, Bishop Bagrat, gave Prime Minister Pashinyan one hour to resign, a demand that was not met. Following this, he called for peaceful acts of civil disobedience to begin across the republic starting May 10.

From that day onward, participants and supporters of the movement began blocking streets and roads, conducting informational actions urging citizens to join them.
