What Georgia Should Do If It Wants to Join the EU: Michel
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, expressed disappointment regarding the ongoing developments in Georgia during the Democracy Summit in Copenhagen.
"I sincerely hope that the authorities in Georgia will clarify their intentions. But if they want to get closer to the European Union, if they want to join the EU, they must respect the fundamental principles of the rule of law and democracy," Michel stated.
According to him, several months ago, the idea of granting EU candidate status to Georgia did not enjoy the support of a majority of countries in the European Council. However, by working with Georgian authorities, leaders from several countries convinced others that granting the status was the right decision.
"And just a few weeks later, we are witnessing attempts to adopt that legislation," Michel added.
