US Threatens Sanctions Against Georgia if Foreign Agents Law Is Not Amended

The United States may impose restrictions against the authorities of Georgia if the Foreign Agents law, passed by Parliament, is not amended. This was announced by James O'Brien, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, according to РИА Новости.

“It is not excluded that the US could suspend financial assistance to Georgia if the foreign agents law adopted by the Georgian Parliament does not align with EU standards,” O'Brien stated. “All financial assistance must be reassessed if we are now referred to as adversaries, rather than partners,” he added.

O'Brien further noted that sanctions, which will include economic measures, as well as travel restrictions, will be applied if “the Georgian authorities continue their attacks on the EU and other partners.”
